Jim Smith
Senior Managing Director
Mr. Smith is the Senior Managing Director for Artemis’ $800 million separate account with New York State Common Retirement Fund and $180 million separate account with New York City Retirement Systems to co-invest alongside larger transactions. These separate accounts are focused on identifying and investing alongside emerging managers in major markets across the U.S. Mr. Smith joined Artemis in May 2011 and is based in metropolitan Washington, DC. He is the Co-chair of Artemis’ ESG Committee.
Mr. Smith has 30+ years of real estate industry experience. Prior to joining Artemis, Mr. Smith was a Managing Director of J.E. Robert Companies (“JER”) and served on the Management Committee, the North American Investment Committee and the US Debt Co-Investment Vehicle Investment Committee. Mr. Smith was responsible for overseeing the asset management activities of JER’s US funds.
Prior to joining JER, Mr. Smith was a Director at Jamestown, where he was responsible for developing the firm’s opportunistic real estate investment program. He has also worked at CGR Advisors as a Vice President and Partner, responsible for the firm’s separate account with Rodamco North America/Abp. This operating company investment program committed $1 billion of equity to invest with seven separate real estate operating partners and provided follow-on capital for acquisition, re-development and development. Mr. Smith began his career at LaSalle Partners in New York City and was a Regional Manager for leasing and management in the Northeast region.
Mr. Smith has a BA in Economics from Hobart College and an MBA in Finance from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
Mr. Smith is a member of the Urban Land Institute and the National Association of Industrial & Office Properties.
